Kutiyattam in a real sense signifies "acting together" was advanced in the ninth century AD dependent on Bharatha's 'Natyasasthra'. This is the most punctual old style sensational artistic expression of Kerala. Kutiyattam is established inside the sanctuary theater; there are at least two characters in front of an audience simultaneously, with the Chakkiars giving the male cast and the Nangiars assuming the female parts. The Nangiars beat the cymbals and discuss sections in Sanskrit, while behind the scenes Nambiars play the Mizhavu, an enormous copper drum.
